Dr. Vanessa L. Bond is Assistant Professor of Music Education at University of Hartford’s The Hartt School where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and serves as the Coordinator of Student Teaching. Dr. Bond’s research focuses on the musical lives of young children (with special interest in the application of Reggio Emilia early childhood approach principles to music education), culturally responsive teaching, and the choral experiences of underrepresented populations. She has presented this work at conferences throughout the United States and abroad.

Dr. Bond joined the Connecticut Children’s Chorus faculty in 2012 and is the current Education Director of CCC as well as the director of the Prelude Choir for children in grades three to five. She has served as a guest conductor for several honor choirs, most recently as the conductor of the Rhode Island All-State Children’s Chorus in 2016. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from Gettysburg College, a Master of Music in Voice Pedagogy and Performance degree from The Pennsylvania State University, and Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education degree from Case Western Reserve University.

Michele Adams joined the Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) in 2007 and serves as the Director of Choirs for the award-winning organization. She conducts two of BCC’s choirs and directs the innovative education program. Described as “eloquent and perfectly tuned” (Boston Musical Intelligencer), her choirs have collaborated with The Boston Pops and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. She is an active guest conductor, adjudicator, and speaker and is the creator and leader of the BCC Professional Development Workshop. Adams earned a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Florida State University and Bachelor of Music in Music Education from The University of South Carolina.

Jim Papoulis composes in many genres and is known for work that combines contemporary, classical, and world sounds. His choral work is constantly inspired by the work he does through the Foundation for Small Voices. He firmly believes that music can heal, educate, celebrate, and empower the lives of children.

Through the Foundation for Small Voices he has conducted workshops with choirs around the globe and has also worked with: Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Beyoncé, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, London Boys Choir, London Symphony, Beijing Children’s Choir, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Snoop Dogg, Tokyo String Quartet, Moscow Philharmonic, Portland Symphony and New World Symphony. His music has been featured at: the Beijing Olympics, the 2008 Presidential Inauguration and the World Cup in South Africa 2010.

Conference Chorus:

All conference participants have the option of singing in the Conference Chorus. The Conference Chorus will be directed by Jo-Michael Scheibe, and will feature Vaughan Williams’ In Windsor Forest and Dona Nobis Pacem from Bach’s B-Minor Mass. Conference Chorus participants are required to purchase a vocal score for In Windsor Forest, for example from here. Please click here to download Dr. Scheibe’s edited Dona Nobis Pacem score.

Participants may sign up to receive PDPs at no additional cost.

ACDA Conference participants can earn up to 45 PDPs. Attendance documentation and summary paper are required as stated below. You will receive a PDP completion certificate via email from UMass in mid-September (upon completion of attendance and summary paper requirements). However, you as an individual are responsible for tracking and submitting your PDP accumulation documentation to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

2-3 pages (typed/double-spaced) of reflection and notes on the content of the conference sessions and the application to your teaching. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF FINAL PROJECT:  Friday, August 11, 2017.  Please submit an email attachment in PDF to There will be no extensions granted.

Conference Headliners:

Jo-Michael Scheibe

Jo-Michael Scheibe chairs the Thornton School of Music’s department of Choral and Sacred Music at the University of Southern California. Currently serving as Chair of the Past President’s Council of the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA), Scheibe has served as National President, National President Elect, Western Division President, and National Repertoire and Standards Chairperson for Community Colleges. Under his leadership, the USC Thornton Chamber Singers received the 2015 American Prize in Choral Music, performed for the 2015 ACDA National Convention in Salt Lake City (his seventh appearance at that event) and were one of twenty-five choirs selected to perform at the Tenth World Choral Symposium in Seoul, South Korea in 2014.

Prior to his appointment at USC, Scheibe served as Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Long Beach City College, Vintage High School in Napa, California, and Huntington Beach High School. He received his DMA from the University of Southern California and his BA and MM degrees from California State University at Long Beach, where he was presented with the distinguished alumnus award.

Scheibe has collaborated with artists ranging from Luciano Pavarotti to Sir Elton John and the Rolling Stones, and he has prepared choruses for international conductors Helmuth Rilling, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Colin Davies, and more. Recordings of his ensembles have been released on the Albany, Cane, Naxos, Arsis and ANS labels.

A champion of contemporary music, Scheibe regularly commissions and performs new works of choral literature. Music publishers Walton, Colla Voce Music, Pavane, and Santa Barbara distribute the Jo-Michael Scheibe Choral Series internationally.

Scheibe presents nationally and internationally as a clinician, conductor, and adjudicator for choruses at all levels. Future engagements include international presentations in Shanghai, Bangkok, and Salzburg; and university presentations and all-state choirs across the country.

Jay Broeker

Jay Broeker teaches general music at The Blake School in Hopkins, Minnesota.  Mr. Broeker holds both Kodály and Orff Schulwerk certification, and is a frequent clinician for AOSA, OAKE, and NAfME conferences and state music education organizations. During the summer he is an instructor in music teacher education courses at the University of Kentucky in Lexington and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jay’s commissioned choral works have been performed by honor choirs in the US and abroad. His choral arrangements are published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing and by Boosey & Hawkes.

Alice Parker

Alice Parker, internationally renowned composer, conductor and teacher, studied composition and conducting at Smith College and the Juilliard School where she began her long association with Robert Shaw. The many Parker/Shaw settings of American folksongs, hymns and spirituals from that period form an enduring repertoire for choruses all around the world.

Her list of published compositions has over five hundred titles, ranging from operas through song cycles, cantatas and choral suites to many individual anthems. She has been commissioned by hundreds of community, school and church choruses, and her works appear in the catalogs of a dozen publishing companies. Each year she tours the United States and Canada, leading performances and workshops on improvisation, rehearsal techniques and score study. To take part in one of her SINGS is to have a rare experience of group improvisation, remarkable for its high level of musical sound.

In 1985, with the founding of MELODIOUS ACCORD, INC., she focused her activities on the heart of vocal music: the melody. The Musicians of MELODIOUS ACCORD, a sixteen-voice professional chorus, has released fourteen albums in the last two decades. Through the Melodious Accord Fellowship Program, mid-career professional musicians are brought together for inspiration and refreshment in their teaching, composing and conducting under her mentorship. The organization also sponsors workshops, symposia, Parker appearances, and publishes an e-Newsletter.

Now a resident of western Massachusetts, Parker has published books on melodic styles, choral improvisation and church music. The Anatomy of Melody (2006) and The Answering Voice (2014) set forth her views on a compositional universe that begins in song, and flowers in musical conversations. The Melodious Accord Hymnal (2010) contains brief versions of many American folk hymns, as well as herown settings of contemporary poets. The second edition of her classic essays on song leading and congregational singing, Melodious Accord: Good Singing in Church, appeared in 2013.

Alice Parker has served on the Board of Directors of Chorus America and was named their first Director Laureate. In 2013 she received the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association. Named Distinguished Composer of the Year 2000 by the American Guild of Organists, she is also a Fellow of the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada. She is the recipient of six honorary doctorates and the Smith College Medal as well as grants from ASCAP, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, and the American Music Center.

Vocal Workshop with Boston’s Renaissance Men @ First Parish Church of Weston

The Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus and the MassACDA Chapter have teamed up to help begin the 2017-18 season with a Vocal Workshop in Weston, led by Eric Christopher Perry, Artistic Director and Conductor of one of Boston’s premier men’s choral music groups, Renaissance Men, and featuring several of their regular performers.

From sound shaping to text interpretation, this early workshop promises the region’s male-voice singers an opportunity to start their singing seasons with renewed capacities.

Renaissance Men was formed in 2014 by six of Boston’s and New York’s most active chamber musicians, educators, and music aficionados, led by Artistic Director/Conductor Eric Christopher Perry. From their beginnings as a sextet they added three more members and added to their Boston-bred early music sounds to offer a program of American religious and folk music they entitled “RenMen Roots.”

Their audiences may have been shocked to see erstwhile Bach specialists strumming away on banjo and upright bass, but their hooting and hollering validated RenMen’s first major attempt to push repertoire boundaries. In February 2016, The Boston Globe lauded RenMen for their groundbreaking musical retrospective, “RenMen 1965,” which juxtaposed traditional choral music and rock/pop songs of that year. It also included the world première of Charles Stacy III’s “Five Clippings” from 1965, a multi-movement work for men’s voices using texts from Globe articles published that year.

In fewer than three years, Renaissance Men has made their mark on Boston’s cultural landscape with seven concert series, performances of several U.S. and world premières by internationally-celebrated composers such as Patricia Van Ness and Daniel E. Gawthrop, leading to a devoted following for their concerts, live-stream broadcasts, and social media outlets.

Dedicated to the art of collaboration, RenMen has partnered with Boston City Singers, Ensemble Musica Humana, and others, plus holding workshops on ensemble marketing and branding with the Boston Singers Resource and Greater Boston Choral Consortium, and now a workshop on Vocal Performance with the Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. Renaissance Men is a proud member of Chamber Music America.

Renaissance Men was founded in 2014 by Anthony Burkes Garza, General Manager, Eric Christopher Perry, Artistic Director/Conductor, Will Prapestis, Social Media Consultant, Peter Schilling, Business Manager, and tenor, Alexander Nishibun. RenMen’s 2017 roster also features Gene Stenger, Francesco Logozzo, Kilian Mooney, Dominick Matsko, Brian Church, and Benjamin Pfeil.

2017 MassACDA High School/Collegiate Choral Festival @ School of Music

The High School/Collegiate Choral Festival welcomes high school choral singers and their directors to participate in one of the following ensembles:

The SSAA Festival Chorus, conducted by Susan Wharton Conkling, Boston University
The TTBB Festival Chorus, conducted by Anthony Trecek-King, Boston Children’s Chorus

No auditions required; directors can honor their finest and submit singers for both choirs. Participants will sing alongside members of the UMass Amherst Chamber Choir and University Chorale as well as sing together in a combined finale of all festival singers.
