Music Director – First Church in Marlborough

Music Director, First Church in Marlborough (Congregational), UCC Position Start Date ~ July 1, 2017

The successful candidate will be responsible for setting the vision for the music ministry, directing adult choir, cultivating, facilitating leadership and participation from within the congregation, and developing and maintaining a music program that is in keeping with the needs and resources of the congregation. Expectations of 10-15 hours per week depending upon the season and musical projects. Potential candidates should understand that the actual hours worked each week could vary significantly at certain times of the year (heavy around Christmas and Easter, very light in the summer). More specifically, the Music Director will:

  • Participate in a cooperative and collaborative team setting
  • Foster the spiritual life of the congregation and its members through music ministry
  • Understand the musical preferences, strengths and opportunities of the congregation
  • Continually learn both about music and about the people in the congregation so that music is appropriate to the needs and growth of the congregation (both musical and liturgical)
  • Select, or guide the selection of worship music, including introits, hymns, anthems, responses, communion settings for regular worship services and help plan and prepare special music for events throughout the year
  • Cultivate the formation of musical groups and other musical offerings from both within the congregation and community
  • Develop and support effective musical leaders within the church
  • Oversee and facilitate communication among the ministerial staff, the accompanist/organist and all music groups: Adult Choir, Bell Choir, Children’s Choir, Contemporary ensemble and any others that may be involved in music and worship

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Attend staff meetings and lead music meetings
  • Collaborate with the Minister on music for worship services. Work with the Minister to determine the appropriate mix of musical styles (contemporary or traditional)
  • Stay current with emerging sacred music literature and practices networking with organizations, people, and resources in and beyond the congregation
  • Oversee storage, organization and indexing of the sheet music collection
  • Co-ordinate music components for the preparation of weekly service bulletins
  • Provide effective and appropriate preparation for rehearsals, worship services, and meetings
  • Oversee copyright licensing, tracking and reporting for music copyright services

Skills Required:
This position involves a good deal of independent task management and accordingly, the candidate should be self-directed and efficient with strong communication and leadership skills. Additionally, the candidate must be:

  • Comfortable and familiar with technology used to support planning, communication and worship
  • Familiar with Public Address (PA) and sound systems
  • Skilled choir director for wide range of ages who is familiar with effective choral methods and vocal pedagogy
  • Capable of growing the music program through personal rapport and team building
  • Able to listen to and communicate effectively with people of all ages and musical backgrounds
  • Possess an interest and knowledge of a wide range of music
  • Have experience working with volunteers and committees
  • Demonstrates passion for music ministry
  • Open to spiritual practices such as leading prayer
  • The ability to write, compose and/or arrange music that contributes to the congregation’s worship experience would be an asset

Education and Experience: The successful candidate will have a music background or degree with a Major in Music, or equivalent level of experience in directing choirs, along with familiarity with United Church of Christ theology.


  • Annual salary of $12,480 paid over a 12 month period
  • Music Director reports to the Trustees of the church
  • Music Director is subject to Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check as required by our Child Safe Policy
